It was Moneys who started the brightest with a few early sights of goal. First Rudi Blankson cued up James Franklyn just inside the box, but his effort was straight at the keeper. Then it was rolls-reversed moments later as a Franko cross was aimed at Rudi, but he couldn’t connect properly and his effort went well wide.
Mostly against the run of play, it was Brockenhurst who took the lead. The away team took a corner then resulted in a long range header, that was blocked just infront of the goal line, but the following clearance ended up in some pinball well inside the box. The ball fell to defender Ryan Batley, who slid the ball low and underneath the unsighted Callum Smart in goal.
There was a small bit of tension building up as Brockenhurst couldn’t capitalise on their lead. First there was a bit of pushing and shoving in one incident, then a poor challenge to stop Asad running down the wing, resulted in a yellow card for Brockenhurst defender JJ Burgess just after 20 minutes.
There was plenty of good passing moves out from the back being carried out by Moneys, but the chances they created weren’t especially threatening. Blankson had the clearest chance on half an hour with a fairly clear sight of goal from inside the box, but his effort went wide of the post.
It took a corner on 33 minutes for Moneys to get back into the game. Jordan Pile’s corner was deflected into his own net by a Brockenhurst defender under pressure from Asad and Tom Cain.
Half-Time: Moneyfields 1-1 Brockenhurst
After the break, another opportunity fell to Blankson, this time trying to place his effort low and on-target, but the Brockenhurst keeper got down well to his left and saved the shot. Valero in goal, again saved moments later with a drilled shot from Adam Payce.
On 55, Lawrence Cooper was brought on for new signing Sam Holubec, who is on a dual-reg signing with Aldershot.
Smart in goal had to use all of his abilities on 57 minutes to keep us level. Two efforts in one phase of play were saved well by the keeper. Shortly after, Asad Ssemwogerere was replaced by Faris Kallouqi.
70 minutes in, Moneys had a corner which again caused issues for Brockenhurst. Pile with another fantastic delivery found Yumo Wan where he somehow looped a header over the keeper and into the net. A defender tried to head it clear, but he only pushed it further into the goal. A full debut goal for the former Stoneham defender.
Two further subs before full time, as Karol Skoczen came on for a debut in place of Rudi Blankson, and Mike O’Connell replaced Adam Payce in injury time.
There were a few half chances for both teams in the final moments, but it was Moneys who finished stronger and held on for a first FA Cup victory in 2 years. At full time, the result of who we will face was undecided as Melksham pegged back Portchester to 2-2 in added time to force a replay.
