It’s back to the early season cup fixtures this Saturday as Moneys host fellow step 4 side, Thame United in the FA Trophy first qualifying round, a 3pm kick-off at the John Jenkins Stadium.
Moneys:
Moneys last cup outting was the narrow 1-2 defeat to local rivals AFC Portchester back on August 16th. A bumper 400+ crowd watched that, as Moneys let a half time lead slip to their Isthmian South Central Division rivals.
Since then its a been somewhat of a rollercoaster over 3 games that have totalled 20 goals across two 4-4 draws and a 4-0 loss.
The 4-4 at home against Hayes & Yeading started the recent chaos, as Moneys twice came from behind, to then lead by 2 goals, but again let that slip to draw come full time. It was probably the first game that really saw the DNA of the new Moneys era, as fast counter attacks in numbers and confident runs caused havoc for the Hayes defense.
Following that was the “rematch” with PO rivals AFC Portchester in the league. Portchy ran away with it in the first half with 4 goals, including a 40+ yard goal over our stand-in keeper on the day. Moneys on the day sadly showed no real glimpse of the potential from other matches as Portchester’s approach never let Moneys get going.
Last Saturday saw another 4-4 as Moneys came back from 3-0 down to claim a point away at Binfield. Depending on how you look at the day, it could have easily been 3 points. Silly goals were conceeded and fantastic chances were near-missed by the Moneys attack. If it wasn’t for an 8 minute spell in the first half, Moneys would have had a lot less to fight back against.
Thame United:
Currently Callum Glen’s side are without a win since August 9th, so a game against a team who have played 3 and lost 3 in the league, might be just the tonic that’s needed. That being said, Thame’s last win came a little more recently as they beat Step 5 outfit Clevedon Town, 3-1 in the FA Cup on August 16th.
Bank Holiday Monday saw Thame lose 2-1 away at Leverstock Green, in the South League Central Division. The loss has left Thame 21st out of 22 in the league with 0 points from their 3 games.
Their most recent outing saw another 2-1 loss away, this time in the FA Cup 1st qualifying round match. They travelled to Chertsey Town, a step 3 side, who compete in the Southern League Premier South.

Moneys visited Thame in September 2017 and came away 2-3 winners. The reverse fixture at Dover Road, saw Moneys run out 4-1 on a Tuesday night in March 2018.
Ones to Watch:
Louis Walsh: Walsh scored the goal in their defeat away at Step-3 Chertsey from the spot. He won the penalty himself, having driven into the left hand side of the box and being brought down, so is clearly a lot to handle. Walsh created more chances on the day too, one effort clattered the cross-bar, so one for Moneys to keep defences locked in on.
Jenson Wright: In the FA Cup game against Clevedon, Wright scored off of a Walsh assist, so clearly has goalscoring ability. He broke into the box, latching onto a Walsh cross off the left.
Mark Riddick: Mark has scored both of Thames 2 goals in the league so far this season, so don’t be fooled by him probably wearing the number 6 jersey as he steps forward to get involved infront of goal.
