It was two moments of brilliance from Sophie Quirk in both halves that were the difference in today’s second fixture of Moneys’ FAWNL Cup campaign.

Moneyfields sit 3rd in the table on one point behind Ascot in 2nd on four points, after they defeated bottom of the group and pointless Bournemouth Sports in the other fixture, while Bournemouth top the group with six points.

Despite chances for Moneys to claw a comeback and a potential penalty call in the second half, Karl Watson’s side came up just short in getting a result against top of the National League South.

Karl Watson made four changes to the side that won three-nil away at Portishead last Sunday, with Amber Howden coming in for Sophie Phelps, Gemma Simmonds coming in for Bekah Tonks, Rose Sitarz for Maisie Aldridge, and Shannon Albuery for Britt Jeal.

Moneys made a fast start, with Shannon Albuery coming very close inside the opening minute, but her shot was tipped past the post by Katie Scadding in the Cherries’ net and out for a corner.

Before her opening goal, Sophie Quirk had two chances early on to put the hosts ahead, after dazzling her way past the Moneys back line, but her former Portsmouth teammate Hannah Haughton comfortably caught both efforts at goal.

However, it was third time lucky for Quirk and the Cherries, and this time Quirk was on hand to give Bournemouth the lead a quarter of the first half gone, with her strike from just inside the 18-yard box flying past Haughton to make it 1-0.

Captain Ali Hall was very close to securing an equaliser a few moments later, but the former double winner with Bournemouth had her late header denied by the crossbar.

Quirk doubled the hosts’ lead just two minutes after the interval, when the winger used her pace again to burst past several yellow shirts, before tapping the ball home to make it two-nil on 47 minutes.

Watson made a triple substitution ten minutes into the second half, with Maisie Aldridge, Kiera Heslam, and Sophie Phelps replacing Rose Sitarz, Meg Fox, and Sophie Phelps.

The Yellows managed to find a rhythm down the Bournemouth end, with chances at goal, but it was a potential penalty shout which led to confusion, with the referee first awarding a spot kick, until then giving Bournemouth a drop ball, after the drinks break, when Elena Cole and Hannah Haughton were receiving treatment.

Albuery collided with Scadding in the penalty area; however, officials believed that the impact was the keeper attempting to protect her body from the collision, leading to a drop ball.

The final two subs for Moneys came just after the stoppage, with Tierney Scott and Brooke Garcia coming on for Beth Burgess and Dream Surin.

Cherries defender and sub Jessica Hennessy headed the ball into the back of the net from a set piece; however, the lineswoman had her flag up for a foul in the area after the free kick was taken.

Moneys kept the pressure rolling for large parts of the end of the game; however, chances from Aldridge and Simmonds were unable to be converted late on for a consolation.
