Moneyfields Women suffered a narrow 2–0 defeat against AFC Bournemouth in the FA Women’s National League Cup, but the scoreline does not fully reflect the competitive nature of the match.
Despite the result, First Team Manager Karl Watson praised his team’s effort, highlighting Sophie Quirk as the decisive factor in the Cherries’ victory. Quirk’s pace and skill proved too much to handle, with both of Bournemouth’s goals coming from moments of brilliance.
“When you’re that quick, as soon as she gets a couple of yards and turns on you, you’re dead. She’s a WSL2-level player not currently playing in the WSL2. Against players like that, it’s very difficult.”

Despite the loss, Watson emphasised the positives. Competing strongly against a well-resourced Bournemouth side, currently top of the South League, gave Moneyfields confidence moving forward.
“For the last two years, the difference between us has come down to very small details,” Watson reflected. “Their investment gives them that extra five percent, but I can’t fault the girls today. If we keep competing with this intensity and playing at this level, we’ll be fine in the league.”
With focus now returning to league action, Watson remains optimistic. The performance showed resilience, determination, and flashes of quality that suggest Moneyfields are well-positioned for success this season.
“We’ll go back to the drawing board, look at what we can do better, and keep building. The group we have here is strong, and we’ll be all right.”
