Tonight we host Bognor Regis Town at the John Jenkins Stadium in an Isthmian South Central fixture.
Moneys:
The lads return after 10 days without a game, looking to get back to winning ways as a return to league action for the first time in 17 days is the focus of a Tuesday night game under the lights of the John Jenkins.
Last time out, Moneys hosted Thame in the FA Trophy and crashed out on penalties. Recent defensive frailties showed their head again as a stoppage time equaliser from Thame, took us to penalties, where we lost 4-5. Moneys had recovered from going 0-1 down, to take a 2-1 lead after goals from Pompey loanee Tayo Singerr and James Franklyn.
It’s been a tough spell defensively for Callum Glen and his very newly crafted side as they learn to play together. Just 4 of the starting 11 played in yellow last season, so it’s no wonder that the team are going through a challenging period of crossing the finishing line to victory come full time. To the neutral, its probably nothing but entertainment with Moneys as of late. An average of over 5 goals per game in the last 6 games have seen back and forth action that makes for entertaining, yet nail biting viewing from a Moneyfields perspective.
Prior to the FA Trophy shootout defeat, Moneys traveled to Binfield in league action back on August 30th. It was a crazy 4-4 game that saw Moneys come back from 3-0 down, to leave with a point, but probably still feeling like it should have been 3. A hat-trick which included 2 penalties from Rudi Blankson and a single goal for Tayo Singerr were what earned us the point on the road.
Bognor Regis:
‘The Rocks’ visit the John Jenkins Stadium for the first time in a competitive fixture, having faced a challenging start to life in the Isthmian South Central Division so far this season. After 6 games, Bognor currently sit 2 places behind Moneys in 18th on 4 points, just outside the relegation zone.
Much change was brought on in Bognor over the summer, mostly due to their relegation from the Isthmian Premier League last season. Bognor finished 21st out of 22 teams, 12 points from safety. The Rocks had been at that level since relegation from the National League South in 2018.
A solid pre-season saw them beat Infinity, Pagham, Midhurst & Eastbourne and Chichester, whilst they did lose to Wimborne Town.
Bognor started the season with an absolute thriller away at AFC Portchester, coming out 4-5 winners on August 9th. The Rocks had been 4-1 down after 52 minutes, but a goal from former Money, Cal Laycock got them back in the game. Two goals from Billy Allcock saw the Rocks level and then a dramatic 97th minute winner from now current Moneys forward Simba Mlambo saw Bognor come away with all 3 points.
Since then, the road for Bognor has been a lot more rocky. A 2-0 loss away at neighbours Littlehampton in the league, was followed by Bognor crashing out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle, losing 3-1 away to Step-5 Essex Senior division side, Hackney Wick.
This seemed to be the trigger for more change as two became one at the helm of the first team. Bognor were co-managed by Michael Birmingham and Jamie Howell, but after 8 months back at the club, Birmingham decided to step down.
More misery on the road followed this news as Bognor again lost away, this time 2-1 at Harrow Borough. They did then manage to get a point on the board, as they drew 1-1 at Horndean. But then the last weekend of August saw another loss, 2-0 to current league leaders Leatherhead.
In their FA Trophy game on Sunday 7th September, Bognor were held to a 2-2 draw and taken to penalties. However Bognor won their shootout, 8-7.
Most recently Bognor played away to Raynes Park Vale in league action on Saturday 13th. Former Pompey academy players, Dan Gifford and Lee Seok-Jae got the goals as the Rocks fell to a 3-2 loss.
