On Sunday Moneyfields will kick-start their ADOBE FA Women’s cup campaign with a trip to Motspur Park in West London, to face fellow fourth-tier side Fulham F.C. in the third round of qualifying.
Last weekend Moneys booked their place in the FAWNL Plate with a 3-0 victory over Bournemouth Sports, finishing Group E in second place on four points.
Karl Watson’s side have drawn Bristol City Academy and will face the Young Robins on Sunday, 19th October in a 14:00 kick-off at the John Jenkins Stadium.
On the draw, Watson said: “It’s a good one, a club that we’ve never played before, the PGAs are always filled with talented youngsters, and they’ll be a strong outfit, and we’re looking forward to that one.”
However, this weekend the focus is all on one of the most prestigious competitions in Women’s football – the FA Cup.
Moneys have had some memorable runs in the tournament, including the 23/24 season when they faced now WSL side – London City Lionesses, in the fourth round at Princes Park in January 2024.
Speaking about Sunday, Karl believes: “We know that it’s going to be a 50/50 game, beautiful environment, lovely facilities, no excuses on the pitch side, and the girls are flying and really looking forward to it.”
We also asked Karl what the FA Cup means to him and the club, to which he adds: “I tell the girls every year and they always laugh at me, and I said it when we had the cup run and we were on Football Focus, and it’s to tell the players to dream and to dream big.
Every year I’m still that young boy with a ball under my arm walking down the tunnel of Wembley, walking out for the cup final, and until you’re out, you’re in it!”
Opposition Overview:
Managed by Steve Jaye, the Whites currently occupy first place in the FAWNL South East, where they have been unbeaten since the start of the season and have accumulated 15 points thus far.
The Cottagers stormed the London & South East Regional league last campaign, where they won the division on 62 points, ten ahead of 2nd place Dartford on 52, earning promotion to the sister league of the FAWNL South West – the FAWNL South East.
The current Fulham side was technically only formed in 2018, but Women’s football at the West London club stems back to 1993, when a group of women formed ‘Friends of Fulham’ over 30 years ago.
That team dissolved twice in the 19 years, both in 2006 and 2010, until it was reformed as ‘Fulham FC Foundation Ladies’ in 2014, which then changed to ‘Fulham F.C. Women’ four years later.
In 2000, they did, however, become the first Professional Women’s team in Europe at that time, but had to reform back to semi-pro status in 2014, where they have since been part of the Fulham FC Foundation, which aims to invest in women and girls’ football via various community programmes.
