After a disjointed start to the season, the new-look Moneyfields Women Reserves are preparing for a crucial run of fixtures as they aim to kick-start their campaign and build some much-needed momentum. Standing in their way this weekend are league leaders AFC Bournemouth.

Over the summer, the squad has undergone major changes. Many of last season’s reserve players have either headed off to university or moved on to pursue first-team football elsewhere in the regional grassroots leagues, leaving the team with a fresh look and plenty of new faces.

The changes haven’t been limited to the pitch, either. Former Reserves assistant coach Gavin Calder has taken up a new challenge as first-team manager at Southampton Women, prompting further reshuffling within the coaching setup. To strengthen the backroom team, Paul Waters and Claire Haskett have joined forces with James Jenkins to guide the new-look Reserves through this transitional phase.

Jenkins explains, “There have been a lot of changes but with each training session and each match the team is growing and improving.

“We’ve recruited well, but it’s required a great deal of patience with several players only turning sixteen this month. We’ve had to wait for them to become eligible while also managing a significant number of injuries. This weekend will be the first time this season that we’ve had something close to a full squad available.”

Looking ahead, captain Ellie Hooker said, “AFC Bournemouth are a top-quality side all over the pitch but this is football and so who knows what can happen if we can remain organised and patient.”
