This Sunday, Moneyfields FC Women embark on their third fixture of the FA Women’s National League Division One South West campaign, with Karl Watson’s side making the 230-mile round trip to Bristol Road to face Portishead Town in a 2:00 pm kick-off.
Despite starting the season unbeaten, recent results have not gone entirely as hoped. In both the FAWNL Cup and league, Moneys recorded back-to-back draws against newly promoted Ascot United—0-0 in the Cup and 1-1 in the league.
Currently, Moneyfields sit second in the league table with four points, two behind leaders Swindon Town, who have secured maximum points from their opening two games.
In Group E of the League Cup, Watson’s side are third. Bournemouth lead the group following their 3-0 win over Bournemouth Sports, while Ascot occupy second place, ahead of Moneys alphabetically.
Sunday’s Opponents
Portishead Town currently sit bottom of the table after successive defeats—first to newly promoted Marine Academy Plymouth, then in a dramatic 5-4 loss at home to Worthing on the opening day.
The Posset narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing second from bottom. Although Southampton Women were demoted, Portishead remained in the division thanks to the FAWNL’s new league format introduced this year.
Over the summer, Josh Richards’ side strengthened significantly, bringing in eight new signings to bolster their squad at Bristol Road.

Manager’s Thoughts
First-team manager Karl Watson said, “Every single season that we’ve been in this league, it’s got better. The technical and tactical side has improved, teams are fitter, everyone’s doing more and trying harder. The levels are going up year in, year out.
You just don’t underestimate anyone in this league, so we’ll be going there fully prepared, the same as we would against Swindon Town, Bristol Rovers, Keynsham, or whoever else we play.”
On the upcoming journey, Watson added, “The players don’t always like these long trips, but fortunately, we’ve got a good coach to travel on, so it’ll be more comfortable. We’ll have a couple of stopovers, keep the players hydrated, and there are still a couple of initiation songs to be done, so no doubt they’ll keep themselves busy.”
