Moneys:
Horndeans visit to the John Jenkins this Saturday, is Moneys second of seven games in a packed October. Its also the first in what is likely to be 6 or 7 weeks straight of Moneys having both a Saturday and a midweek game. Games with Kingstonian, Bedfont Sports and Harrow Borough were all moved to midweek fixtures due to their respective runs in the FA Cup and FA Trophy. Whilst later in the month sees Money’s first local cup games of the season as we face Baffins Milton Rovers in the Portsmouth Senior Cup in mid-November, and then to be arrange with be a Hampshire Senior Cup tie against either the Blackfield & Langley or the Royal Navy.
That busy October however, got off to a superb start last Saturday, as Moneys defeated Binfield 2-0 at the John Jenkins. Goals from Simba Mlambo and Tayo Singerr were enough for all 3 points. It was also a first clean sheet since the opening league game of the season, when Moneys won 0-2 away at Southall, back on August 9th. In truth Osei-Owusu in goal didn’t have a huge amount to do, so credit to the whole team for improving defensively after that testing run of conceeding so many goals through August and into September.
Moneys saw the return of Ciaran Martin last Saturday, on loan from Pompey’s Academy, as well as the debuts of Max Smith and Jack Lumsden. Jack came on as a late sub but there was no doubt all 3 had a positive impact on proceedings. Fellow Pompey loanee Tayo Singerr had missed a penalty which he had smartly won himself, but later made up for that as he finished well on the edge of the six yard box to seal the victory and three points.
Our last outing before Binfield was 10 days before, with the narrow 0-1 loss to Egham Town. A depleted squad looked to carry on from the previous success against Bognor, in the 3-2 comeback win 7 days prior. Egham’s Jordi Ebanda got the goal for ‘the Sarnies’ in a tight game that did see Moneys defence look much more solid compared to recent outings, but for only the second time this season, Moneys failed to get on the scoresheet.
Horndean:
The club which was established in 1887, are playing their 3rd season at Step 4, having won the Wessex Premier back in 2022/23. ‘The Deans’ were actually founding members of the Wessex League back in 1986. They actually struggled at this level for some years, and were eventually relegated back to the Hampshire Premier League in the 1994/95 season. It took until 2010/11 to return to the Wessex Premier division where they stayed under that 2022/23 promotion.
Horndean narrowly escaped relegation last season from the Isthmian League South Central Division, finishing just 1 point outside the relegation zone on 43 points in 17th. By comparison, Moneys finished 7th on 74 points. The previous year, Horndean had been placed in the South East Division, but finished a much safer 14th.
‘The Deans’ start to 2025/26 has certainly left them looking nervously downward, as they look up on everyone, being currently bottom of the league. From 9 games, they’ve won just once and lost six times. They have the second worst goal difference too, having conceded 23 goals and scored 13.
The last win for the side from PO8 in any competition, came way back on August 9th, when they beat Binfield away, on the opening league game of the season. A goal each for Lewis Olajide and Oliver Erdinc, were followed with a brace by Brandon Chebby for a 1-4 victory.
Chebby is in fact Horndeans top scorer this season with 3 goals to his name. The Captain who often wears number 9, has failed however to find the back of the net in the five games since August 25th.
Their most recent outing would have felt like one of the most painful, despite the narrow final scoreline. They lead 0-2 at halftime, away to league leaders Leatherhead. Goals from Ryan Carroll and former Money Mikey O’Connell had gives Horndean the lead. However, 3 second half goals from the home side without reply from Horndean, stole all 3 points.

Previous Meetings:
Moneys and Horndean faced off 3 times last season, with a draw and 2 victories for Moneys.
The draw was the most recent result, as Moneys visited Five Heads Park back on Easter Monday in April. It was a 1-1 draw, and the result that sadly ended Moneys outside chance of getting into the playoffs. Cal Laycock getting the goal for Moneys and Waledin Ahmad
Back in February, Moneys hosted Horndean in the Portsmouth Senior Cup. Moneys came out 3-1 victors as they carried on their journey to the final. Two goals from Cal Laycock were followed by a Tom Cain finish from close range.
The other league meeting last season was back on Boxing Day last year, as Moneys won 4-1 at the John Jenkins. Now Moneys player Rudi Blankson had actually given Horndean the lead early in the second half, but goals from George Baker, Ethan Gee, Harry Thorpe and Cal Laycock, gave Moneys the win.
Ones to Watch:
Brandon Chebby: Despite having not scored in 5, number 9 and often Captain, Chebby, is definitely a man to keep tabs on. He also scored 4 from 11 appearances last season for Horndean.
Mikey O’Connell: Having started the season at Moneys, O’Connell is somewhat of a known quantity, despite not having got many minutes in Yellow or Green. He’s strong with the ball and likes to go forward as well, having already scored once in his 4 games since joining ‘The Deans’
Ryan Carroll: 2 goals from 9 appearances, he often wears the number 7 jersey. One of the goals was in that most recent outing away at Leatherhead. That goal was a cheeky lob from only just inside the opposition half at Leatherhead, so clearly a confident player.
